Apple announces move to Intel chips

So much for being pretty sure that Apple wasn't going to roll this one out today. According to everybody's press releases, reports, etc. and what I heard sitting in the Keynote (now available via QuickTime), Apple will begin shipping Macintoshes that are based on the Intel CPU architecture by June …

Rampant speculation over PPC->Intel switch at Apple

CNet is again reporting that they have heard strong rumblings that Apple will announce on Monday a switch to Intel-based CPUs in the Macintosh line. I'm skeptical, but we were all skeptical when people discussed the switch to the PowerPC from the 68xxx architecture in the early 1990's, so we'll …

Anandtech analyzes G5 performance

An interesting article from Anandtech compares the PowerMacintosh G5 to similarly configured PCs and finds it lacking as a server due to problems with thread spawning and (therefore) forking. However, they like it as a workstation. Perhaps Apple would like to comment on this at the WWDC.

April Fools jokes on the net

As is customary, the internet is rife with April Fools day jokes on April 1. Anyone who doesn't have a strong stomach for a (mostly bad) joke, should probably stay off the net until April 2. Personally, I don't tend to post anything on the "Pages" on April 1 that …

FUD: Security Marketing 101

Now, I'd be just about the first person in line to claim that people don't take security seriously enough on computers. However, Symantec may well have reached new heights in the use of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) to promote the sale of product. A number of articles, such as …

New Safari spoofing flaw

The Mac may be the best defense against most viruses and spyware, but there is still a need to be careful out there when riding on the wild internet. According to an advisory from Secunia, the flaw uses a visual trick to convince users that they are at a web …

Mac Mini IT opinion

An interesting take on the Macintosh Mini from ComputerWorld senior news columnist Frank Hayes today at MacCentral. Basically, he thinks it is going to have an effect on the IT marketplace, and probably for the better, but not because it will take off, mostly because it puts Apple aiming computers …

Dell questions Apple's long-term strategy

It's not a huge surprise to have the CEO of Dell (Kevin Rollins) decrying Apple's business strategy, but in this article in Silicon.com, Rollins shows some interesting "insights" (so to speak) about consumer electronics and the consumer industry. At one point, he remarks that the iPod is a "one …

You know you're successful when...

Not that anyone doubted that the iPod had become an icon, but I'm sure Apple approves of the nod to its newest member, the iPod Photo, by Playboy. Playboy has announced availability of iBod, a new feature that will provide downloadable nude photos sized just for the iPod Photo.

Apple.com taken over by tsunamis

Apple's usually highly-visited site is currently providing a message of condolence ("Our hearts reach out to those hurt by the Indian Ocean tsunamis") and pointers to a wide variety of relief organizations. Cool.

Apple hole leaves OSX management open to snooping

A detailed article from AFP548.com (Macintosh server administrator's website) gives a pretty disturbing description of a problem that has been around in OSX for a while. The good news: it was finally fixed in the September 30, 2004 security patch. Those of you doing insecure management of OSX Servers …

Another take on the Apple Chameleon patent

An article on Apple-X.Net adds a lot of detail to the conjecture over the recently published "Chameleon patent" that a number of recent Mac sites have been talking about. The patent is probably best described (in layman's terms) in Apple Files for Chameleon Patent and Morph Trademark, an article …

iTunes store tops 1 million songs

Apple's iTunes Music Store has (according to an announcement by Apple Computer) reached 1 million songs in its catalog for download in the US. They have also stated that they now have songs from over 600 independent labels on the US site.

Apple special in Business Week

BusinessWeek has a series of articles about Apple this week in a special report entitled Apple: The Next Generation. The five articles look at the company's performance since Jobs took over the reins (again), corporate and government prospects, the role of clustered Macs in supercomputing, and their current push toward …
